Over recent years, the State Government through the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure has been working with the Rural City of Murray Bridge on the future ownership and management of the Murray Bridge Railway Station and the land and infrastructure between the railway line and foreshore from Mannum Road through to the Car Bridge. During the last six months, these negotiations have moved a step closer and the Department and Council have agreed in principle on areas that will be handed over to Council on long term leases or licences. This is now subject to final approval by the State Government. The Railway Precinct area offers significant future potential for tourism and historic related activities, accommodation, pedestrian access and cycle paths to the River Murray utilising the existing Lavender Walking Trail. The Council and State Government are committed to preserving the rail history, associated buildings and infrastructure contained within the precinct wherever possible. To achieve this some buildings and infrastructure that are no longer able to be preserved or that have little historical/ architectural merit will be removed to enable activities more aligned with the future vision of the area to be undertaken within this precinct in the future. Another business in this precinct, impacted through the negotiations is Moritz Marine Pty Ltd. Previous leases over the land with both the State Government and Council have expired, as such the owner has been formally advised by both parties that an extension of the leases will not continue and in June 2012 this land will revert back to the State Government and Council respectively giving the business owner six months to make new arrangements and tidy the land in question. Council’s position in relation to the statement of the Moritz Marine Pty Ltd lease is as follows: “… While Council is acutely aware of the impact of its decision on this particular business owner and his family, it is important that this area be cleaned up and made available for future tourism related activities that are in keeping with what the community envisages for activating this area in the future and opening up the riverfront areas as advised during the Imagine Your Rural City 2020 public consultations…” Mayor Arbon said. “… In order for the Rural City to make the most of its location adjacent to the River Murray, it is vitally important that this area is returned to open space for visitors and the community to access and enjoy …” Any enquiries in relation to this matter should be directed to Malcolm Downie, A/Executive Manager, Corporate and Community Services on telephone 8539 1145. |
