| The Beatles - Let It Be |
|
Although most of Let It Be was recorded before their 1969 album Abbey Road, it is often argued amongst critics that Abbey Road should be considered their final effort. Let It Be was initially meant tbe released before Abbey Road, but The Beatles were unhaooy with the mastering of the album and gave it to Phil Spector instead - which delayed the release. Let it Be was accompanied with a film release of the same name. It was initially intended to be a television documentary but after the split of The Beatles was released as a feature film instead.
Across the Universe Across The Universe first appeared on a charity compilation in December 1969 - Nothing's Gonna Change Our World. The sound of the song was inspired by Lennon's interest in Transcendental Meditation in the late 60s. John Lennon said this about the song: "I was lying next to my first wife in bed and I was thinking. It started off as a negative song and she must have been going on and on about something. She'd gone to sleep and I kept hearing, 'Words are flowing out like endless streams...' I was a bit irritated and I went downstairs and it turned into a sort of cosmic song rather than, 'Why are you always mouthing off at me?'... The words are purely inspirational and were given to me - except for maybe one or two where I had to resolve a line or something like that. I don't own it; it came through like that."
Let It Be Paul McCartney said he was inspired to write Let It Be after he had a dream about his mother, who passed away when he was 14. McCartney said: "It was great to visit with her again. I felt very blessed to have that dream. So that got me writing 'Let It Be'." Let it Be won an Academy Award in 1971 for Best Original Song Score from the movie Let It Be. Linda McCartney sang backing vocals on Let It Be.
The Long and Winding Road The Long and Winding Road became The Beatle's 20th (and final) US number 1 hit. Paul McCatney said on writing Long and Winding Road: "I just sat down at my piano in Scotland, started playing and came up with that song, imagining it was going to be done by someone like Ray Charles. "I have always found inspiration in the calm beauty of Scotland and again it proved the place where I found inspiration." Paul McCartney cited Phil Spector's production of the song as one of the reasons The Beatles disbanded. Nine days after Spector went against his wishes on the dubbing of the song McCartney announced the breakup of The Beatles.
Get Back Get Back was originally released as a single credited as"The Beatles with Billy Preston". But a different mix of the song appeared as the closing track on The Beatle's album Let It Be. It was actually the same take used for the recording in both versions - to the Let It Be version Spector added studio chatter before the song and McCartney and Lennons closing remarks after the rooftop concert - which made it seem like an entirely different track.
