alt

"If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite".

It was a line that would inspire rock music history, written in the 1700's by English poet William Blake.

After a chance meeting between Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek The Doors were born. They started playing in LA clubs, when they were signed by a record label who saw one of their performances. Later in the same month, The Doors were fired after a profanity filled performace of The End - which later became the final track on their first album.

The Doors self-titled debut albumwas recorded in just six days on a 4 track recorder in 1966. Bass and drums took one, Guitar and Organ the next, Jim Morrison's voice on the third and the fourth was used to master the recording. It was released in both stereo and mono.

Break On Through to the Other Side and The End were both censored on the stereo album but on the mono master of the album you can hear Jim Morrisons profanities in The End and the drug reference 'She Get's High' in Break on Through.

Break on Through (to the other side)

Break on Through was their first single ever released.

Jim Morrison 'borrowed' some of the lyrics from City of Night - a book written by John Rechy in 1963.

Krusty The Klown also sung it during his younger years....

Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)

Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) was a cover of a song written in 1929 by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht for the controversial German opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany. Although some of the lyrics were changed by The Doors.

Light My Fire

The Doors version of the song was released in 1967 and reached no 1 for three weeks on the US Billboard music charts, but it was Jose Feliciano's cover version of Light My Fire in 1969 that won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Light My Fire was the song that got The Doors banned from TV's The Ed Sullivan Show for life. The Doors were asked to perform the song on the show in 1967 but were told they needed to change the line "Girl we couldn't get much higher' because of the drug references. The Doors agreed, but as the show went live to air they performed the line anyway and the host cut the song of halfway through and abruptly ended the show. You can even make out the other band members smirking in the video.

Back Door Man

Back Door Man was originally a Willie Dixon blues song from 1961.

During a performance of Back Door Man in Connecticut in December 1969 Jim Morrison was arrested on stage for "giving an indecent or immoral exhibition." He had been confronted by police prior to his performance after he was seen in an alledged sexual encounter with a young girl. He said this during his performance, just before he was arrested on stage:

"We started talking and we wanted some privacy and so went into this little show room. We weren't doing anything. You know, just standing there talking, and then this little man in a little blue suit and a little blue cap came in there. He said 'Whatcha doin' there?' 'Nothin'.' But he didn't go away, he stood there and then he reached round behind him and brought out this little black can of something. It looked like shaving cream. And then he sprayed it in my eyes. I was blinded for about 30 minutes."

The End

The End was used in the movie Apocalypse Now and Director Francis Ford Coppolo had it remixed to include the line that was edited out of the original stereo release"F#$& The Mother".

This was the song that got them fired from their first gig.
