CFS Regional Prevention Officer for the Murraylands resgion says there is one message he continually tried to drum into those conducting burn off's on their property.
It's preparation and due diligence.
Many feel that they are entitled to burn whatever they want, whenever they want without concern for those affected by smoke or the fire itself.Chris reminds those who think that way that you can still be prosecuted outside of fire danger season for lighting a fire that gets out of control, especially if the flames damage a neighbouring property. Local councils also have powers under EPA rules to ensure the right things are being burned.
This week saw more than a dozen private burn off's jump containment lines in the Murraylands area after the fire danger season was officially closed on April 15. This left the CFS to mop up, with some landowners not doing the right amount of preparation or following burn off guidelines. Chris says there are some simple things to ensure you have as much control over a fire as possible.
