The South Australian Upper House unanimously passed a motion yesterday for a public inquiry into traffic issues in Hahndorf, including the controversial diversion of heavy vehicles down River and Strathalbyn Roads.

The inquiry, which must be completed by June 20, 2026, will examine how the decision was made, the impacts on amenity, safety and the environment, and explore alternative freight options through the Adelaide Hills. It will also assess flow-on effects for Hahndorf, Mount Barker and surrounding communities.

Greens MLC Robert Simms led the motion, saying it reflects a commitment to putting people into planning.

The Greens recently hosted a forum in Mylor where residents raised concerns about wildlife, safety and quality of life. The Liberal opposition is also backing the inquiry, after more than 11,000 locals signed a petition opposing the diversion.

Local community member Anne Fordham told ARN’s Adam and Jennie this morning the inquiry gives residents a formal voice in the process.

“It’s great to have the issue acknowledged and we look forward to putting more light on the problems in Hahndorf and even Mount Barker,” she said.

“We would like to reinstate Echunga Road, which was the original truck road… but also there’s potential to develop a third interchange for Mount Barker to the south, because based on the rate of growth, Adelaide Road is going to reach capacity fairly soon.”

A community delegation is expected to meet with Transport Minister Emily Burke in the coming weeks, as the issue shapes up as a major focus in the Heysen electorate heading into the next state election.
