Health experts have confirmed that Lake Alexandrina and the Goolwa Channel are now safe for swimming, diving, fishing, and other recreational activities.
Dr. David Cunliffe, SA Health Principal Water Quality Adviser, stated, “Recent testing of water quality at Lake Alexandrina has shown there is no longer a presence of a blue-green algae bloom”.
Heavy winter rains have contributed to the significant decrease in algae concentrations, ensuring that activities such as swimming, diving, and fishing can now safely resume, including in the Goolwa channel. Pets can also enjoy the water safely, and fish caught from the lake are safe to consume.
This update comes four months after the initial detection of toxic blue-green algae blooms.
SA Water does not source water from the lake and has confirmed that water it supplies from other sources to the area is safe to drink.
Routine weekly testing of the lake will continue.
