Two young women from the Murraylands have been celebrated for their passion and involvement in local country shows as part of SA’s Young Rural Ambassador Awards, with Peake’s Elsie Johnson claiming the top prize.

Johnson was named the state winner, following her extensive history and work with the Murray Bridge Show, which she says started when she was just three years old.

The Walford Year 12 student volunteers weekly in the school OSHC program, and enjoys attending country shows, entering cookery and participating in young judges and paraders competitions including sheep and poultry.

On behalf of the Karoonda Show, Matilda Baumgurtel came second; she was recognised for her art and baking entries at local shows, her work as a tutor and a grain classifier for Viterra last summer and for her focus on sustainable farming practices.

The Young Rural Ambassador Award, run by SA Country Shows for 25 years, recognises the contribution young adults in rural and regional South Australia make to agricultural shows.
