FREMANTLE’S perfect start to the AFLW season has continued, with Kiara Bowers starring in a commanding 30-point win over Adelaide at Norwood Oval.
In hot conditions on Sunday, the Dockers overcame a scoreless first quarter to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games and inflict the Crows’ first loss of the season with a 7.1 (43) to 1.7 (13) win.
Bowers led the way in a typically physical manner, with 13 tackles to go with her 23 possessions.
She had plenty of support with Hayley Miller prominent with 15 touches and Ashley Sharp and Gemma Houghton kicking two goals apiece.
For the Crows, Ebony Marinoff continued her fine season with 23 disposals and Anne Hatchard gathered 21 possessions.
With concussed Adelaide skipper Chelsea Randall looking on from the stands, the Dockers jumped out of the blocks with the first five inside 50s of the game.
But Adelaide’s Rachelle Martin kicked the only score off the boot in an opening- term arm wrestle.
The Crows led by two points at the first break, but the visitors were able to find more space as the second quarter progressed and soon snatched the momentum.
Tiah Haynes kicked her first AFLW goal after Bowers found her inside 50 with a pinpoint pass and Sharp won the foot race to poke home a ground ball that gave Fremantle an 11-point halftime lead.
The Crows pressed after the restart with two behinds to Stevie-Lee Thompson, but Bianca Webb’s first AFLW major sparked a pivotal three-goal burst that put the Dockers up by 26 points at the final change.
For the first time in their history, Adelaide was goalless at three-quarter time after Erin Phillips missed a set shot after the siren, but the Crows superstar kicked truly six minutes into the final term to register her side’s only major of the contest.
Back-to-back goals to Gemma Houghton sealed an impressive win that moved Fremantle to a 3-0 win-loss record and saw the Crows drop to 2-1.
