More Water Headed Down The Murray

Additional environmental water will be released down the River Murray this month, to prepare the Coorong and Lower Lakes for the warmer months ahead.

SA Environment minister Ian Hunter says the extra 100 gigalitres, from the Goulburn River in Victoria, will help support the river’s fish, bird and frog populations as well as improving fish access through the barrages and top up local lagoons for migratory birds.

"The spring environmental water release will encourage breeding to improve native frog, fish and bird populations which are yet to return to pre-Millennium Drought population numbers."

"This collaboration between environmental water holders in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia shows that multiple ecological benefits can be achieved across the system by working together to deliver environmental water as part of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan."

The improved flow will also help keep the mouth of the river open and will flush salt from the system.

The increased water is a joint collaboration between governments in SA, Victoria and NSW as part of the Murray Darling Basin Plan.
