The Federal Government is considering a uniform garbage collection scheme that would convert rubbish into compost for farmers.
Each year, 3.1 million tonnes of edible food is thrown out by Australian households, with half the nation's rubbish bins filled with food scraps each week, which could otherwise break down in green waste or compost.
Environment Minister Sussan Ley is urging state and local governments to harmonise waste collection to meet ambitious targets set by the National Waste Policy Action Plan.
"Next time environment ministers meet, we're going to have this high on the agenda because it's just too important to ignore," Minister Ley told 9News.
