The vast majority of our readers agree that local council meetings should be accessible online to the public.
Mount Barker Council has twice voted down a proposal to provide live video of public council meetings to the community. While some Councillors agreed with the idea, some expressed concern about potential legal ramifications and costings.
Over the past week we have been asking you in our web poll “Should Public Council Meetings Be Live Streamed Online?”
Of the respondents, just 12% said 'No', 68% said 'Yes, with viewers able to ask questions' and 20% said 'Yes, but restrictions on viewers' comments'.
It will be at least another year before the Mount Barker District Counci can vote on the proposal again, due to Local Government Act legislation, unless a special vote is called to revisit it.
