A man has been fined $3,000 for 'significantly' injuring a young girl while driving a boat on the River Murray.

Dwayne Kajanto, 42, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday over the incident which occurred when the man was staying with his family in Morgan on 2 January, 2020.

The court heard that the experienced boatie hit a girl while travelling at excessive speeds, which caused significant injuries to the victim.

The Seaford Meadows resident, who grew up in Baremera on the river, pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to operating a vessel without due care and at speed near a person in water.

His attorney Wayne Carlin said  Kajanto is remorseful for the incident but despite the guilty plea, his client had not been travelling in a speed restriction zone and was at a "miminal" speed at the time of the incident.

"He’s deeply sorry for what has occurred, he’s been in shock,” Mr Carlin said.
