The Mount Barker District Council plans to divert $70,000 in ratepayers money to the Adelaide Festival.
In the 2021-22 Draft Budget, now out for community consultation, $20,000 has been allocated towards corporate sponsorship for the event and $50,000 has been set aside for an Adelaide Hills-based event
As the district is facing a $700,000 cash shortfall under the draft budget, Councillor David Leach moved a motion during Monday's council meeting to divert the funds in order to save money.
Councillors were divided on the issue, with half agreeing and the other half advocating to support art events in the same way as sporting venues and events.
Mayor Ann Ferguson had the deciding vote in favor of supporting the Adelaide Festival.
The draft budget is now open for community consultation and can be accessed at mountbarker.sa.gov.au.
