The first ever STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics forum to be held in the Murraylands will kick off at Murray bridge High this morning, officially opened by the Education Minister Susan Close.

"Students need highly engaged, well-qualified teachers who use quality teaching and learning approaches that encourage, risk, innovation and problem-solving." said Minister Close

"The State Government’s STEM Works program will provide around 75,000 South Australian children in 139 public schools with innovative and engaging learning facilities to help expand their knowledge about this dynamic area of study."

"We know that three quarters of the fastest growing occupations now require STEM skills and knowledge it is critically important that our children are learning the skills that they will need to fulfill these roles."

More than 400 teachers are expected to attend, getting involved in interactive workshops to better teach South Australian children the benefits of becoming creative thinkers, problem solvers, collaborators and strong communicators.

Murray Bridge Education Director Stan Hagias says STEM is vital for the future of South Australia.

"STEM education is one of the most effective approaches for educators in preparing students for success in further education and the workforce that awaits them."

"The purpose of the STEM forum is to better understand how to engage students through quality and innovative teaching methods."

"The initiative will support the work of educators in the region by giving school leaders the opportunity to present and share current best practices and establish valuable professional learning communities."
