Locals Nominated For Community Achievement Awards

Murray Bridge man Ronald Waters has been nominated for the TAFE SA Connecting CommunitiesAward in the 2017 South Australian Community Achievement Awards.

Ron has been raising Awareness for the prevention of Child Abuse, Bullying, Suicide Prevention and Domestic Violence prevention as the Founder and CEO of People Against Intentional Neglect, and the Predator Prevention Team which patrols schools, shops, parks and local streets on the lookout for Suspicious behaviour.

Ron himself is a Survivor of Institutional Abuse as a Child. He was diagnosed with Bipolar and PTSD and age 14. Choosing not to take medication to compabt these issues, he uses positive thinking, Diet and motivation to combat mental illness.

The Coorong District Council has also been nominated for the Flinders Foundation Leadership and Innovation in Health Award for their Healthy Highways initiative.

Since its 2016 inception, the aim has been to create healthier menus at outlets across Council, which will increase community wellbeing and attract increased visitation – where travellers specifically – are encouraged to stop, eat and play.

Believed to be the first of its kind in Australia, the project has seen Council and its OPAL (Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle) team lead a partnership with more than 20 local businesses, the Heart Foundation, TAFE, Flinders University, UNI SA, SA Health, the Premier’s Healthy Kids Menu Taskforce and others to increase nutritional dine-in and take-away options in cafes, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and service stations.

Winners will be announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday 17th November 2017. Each category winner will receive a $2,000 Award Prize from the Commonwealth Bank and a trophy.
