We Can All Help Stop Weeds Spreading From Over The Border

Natural Resources SA are working to stop feral weeds from hitching a ride on trucks and cars from interstate into South Australia.

When Spring hits they’ll conduct surveys and check patches along the South Eastern Freeway previously infested with grasses such as buffel, fountain and African love grass, and weeds including boxthorn and silver leaf nightshade, many of which threaten agriculture in the region.

Natural Resources SAMDB District Manager Sarah Lance says it takes effor from everyone to ensure the weed spread is kept to a minimum.

“With support from DPTI we are able to keep on top of one of the key weed infestation routes into our region,” Ms Lance said.

“Freeways and highways are places to be really aware of for new invasive weeds."

“Weed species from interstate and other areas can easily hitch rides on trucks and cars, in tyres, dirt on the vehicle, in the loads being carried or even inside on the carpeted flooring."

“This is why often the newest weeds into our region are spotted along the roadways and it is critical we pounce on them early,” she said.

We’re being asked to check our cars tyres and carpets and ensure there aren’t any unwanted hitchhikers and to make sure we don’t just throw them out on the side of the road.
