Australia’s chief scientist is in South Australia today, investigating the independent agency tasked with approving drilling in the Great Australian Bight.
Dr Alan Finkel's visit is part of a week-long consultation with coastal communities including fishing associations, community groups, traditional owners and commonwealth agencies. He is gauging their perspectives on the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA)’s decision making on oil drilling approval.
His audit is due to be reported to the Federal Government by late August and it may or may not be made available to the public, at the Government's discretion.
