There has been an increase of illegal wood cutting and collecting through the Alexandrina region.

The Council has been alerted to a number of cases in which people are cutting and collecting firewood on roads and private land.

Roadside wood collection is not allowed throughout South Australia unless a particular council permits it.

A reason for this is to preserve the region's biodiversity.

Areas out of bounds include parks, verges and national parks.

Aside from purchasing commercially available firewood, owners of private property are allowed to pick up fallen timber on their land without fear of prosecution.

It is recommended that those wanting to collect wood from other people's properties ask permission or risk facing prosecution.

Any suspicious activity on roads or on private land can be reported directly to police - 131 444.
