The Blackwood roundabout has been named SA’s riskiest intersection.

Despite a $3.5 million upgrade, the notorious spot has been identified by hundreds of RAA survey respondents for its poor layout, confusing signage, line marking and inappropriate speed limit.

The survey was completed by more than 1300 road users, giving motorists, cyclists and pedestrians the opportunity to nominate a road or intersection they believe needs repairs or major upgrades.

It is at the top of the list of roads and intersections that the organisation is calling to be fixed and better maintained.

RAA Senior Manager Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said the survey highlighted the need for ongoing maintenance along the notorious stretch.

“The intersection received the second-highest number of votes in the 2017 RAA Risky Roads Survey and has since been reconstructed – with line markings altered in an attempt to improve the intersection,” Mr Mountain said.

“Despite the work that’s been completed, it’s clear respondents still feel concerned about the operation of the roundabout.”

Mr Mountain said the annual Risky Roads survey helps RAA understand the issues associated with SA’s roads and intersections from a user perspective and advocate for improvements.

“There have been 1,007 casualty crashes resulting in 31 deaths and 1,353 injuries along the 10 riskiest roads between 2014 and 2018, which highlights that upgrades and repairs are needed to reduce the overall level of risk to all road users,” Mr Mountain said.

“Capturing feedback from people using the roads is critical to helping RAA understand issues with the regional and metropolitan road network and work with authorities to improve road performance and safety for all road users.

The Horrocks Hwy in the north was named riskiest road, with poor maintenance, and a lack of overtaking opportunities.

Other roads listed include the South Eastern Fwy from Mt Barker to Glen Osmond, Victor Harbor Road and Main South Road. The Seaview Rd, Budgens Rd intersection on Victor Harbor Rd was also listed as a risky intersection.
