NT pay freeze comes into force

A pay freeze for MPs and public sector executives in the Northern Territory has come into force as the government seeks to save $25 million over the next three years.

The freeze is among 70 measures introduced by the Labor government to turnaround the Territory's ailing finances and return the budget to surplus by 2027/28.

Treasurer Nicole Manison said the tough decision was necessary after the government was hit by a $500 million cut to GST returns.

However, the treasurer said the move would not impact on frontline workers including teachers, nurses and police.

"We are ensuring that it is the politicians and executives who do the heavy lifting to fix the budget," she said.
