Victorians urged to protect personal info

Victorians are being warned to keep their personal details safe to prevent identity theft in the lead-up to the end of the financial year.

Consumer Affairs Minister Marlene Kairouz headed to a free paper-shredding event in Melbourne's west on Saturday to spruik the message to safely bin confidential documents to prevent them from getting into the wrong hands.

"It's always easier to carefully dispose of documents containing sensitive or confidential information than it is to resolve the implications that come from having your identity misused," she said.

More than 4700 reports of identity threat have been reported this year, costing Australians more than $1.7 million.
