Local Footy Wrap – 26th May

As wintery conditions begin to start settling in, the early finals pictures are becoming clearer in the River Murray and Great Southern footy leagues; the same can’t be said however for Division One of the Hills Football League.

Mount Lofty are staking their claim as a serious premiership aspirant after a 26-point win at home against Mount Barker, as part of Round 6 action in Div One of the Hills Footy League. 

The Devils kicked inaccurately throughout and trailed at the main break as a result, however only conceded one goal in the second half to hold their place at the top of the ladder. 

Elsewhere, Nairne Bremer and Hahndorf returned to the winners list, while Blackwood won their first game of the season with a 25-point win over Onkaparinga Valley. 

Over in the Country Division, Macclesfield and Kersbrook moved themselves into the top three with two close wins, while Echunga remained undefeated with a 22-point win over Gumeracha.

The top four is taking shape in the River Murray Footy League, with Round 7 action on Saturday separating two bolters from the pack. 

Both Mannum and Tailem Bend have started well as they both look to return to finals action, however had their colours lowered in heavy losses to two contenders in Jervois and Imperial. 

Elsewhere, Mypolonga’s slide has continued with a 20-point loss to Southern Mallee, while league leaders Coorong won their 24th straight match with a huge win over Rambler.

GREAT SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

The Great Southern’s top five teams all won on Saturday, with Round 7 play on Saturday creating a gap between the best and the rest.

There was nearly a huge upset however, with the undefeated Victor Harbor forced to up the ante in the last quarter to survive a strong challenge from winless Strathalbyn, eventually winning by 29 points. 

Other matches saw Willunga keep Mount Compass at arm’s length throughout to win by 21, while Myponga-Sellicks, McLaren Districts and Encounter Bay all won easily.
