Death cap mushrooms have been found at several areas around the Adelaide Hills, following the recent deluge of rain.

The extremely poisonous plants resemble some edible species, which has prompted a warning from the Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier.

Professor Spurrier has urged people to steer clear of wild mushrooms, saying there’s no reliable way to tell if a wild mushroom is safe or poisonous.

Parents, caregivers and pet owners are also urged to keep an eye on their loved ones while going for a walk around the region. Even in tiny amounts, death caps are extremely poisonous when ingested.

For more information, contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 or call 000 in an emergency.
