The Mount Barker Council has approved the plans for a new battery energy storage system, despite opposition from locals within the town.
The Council Assessment Panel gave the green light to ACEnergy, who will build on Greenhills Road in Meadows under the condition that they restore the land once they’re done with the project.
Concerned locals have highlighted that the system’s location is dangerous due to the region’s high bushfire risk, with batteries burning more intensely than other materials.
In response, town planners URPS say a fault management system, along with an onsite 72-kilolitre water tank, are in the plans to prevent fires.
