A heritage railway cottage in the heart of Tailem Bend has been destroyed by fire, with its owner devastated by the loss.
MFS and CFS crews were called to Railway Terrace just after 5pm yesterday, Wednesday the 20th of August, finding the house and an adjoining shed fully alight. Despite efforts from about eight trucks, both structures were destroyed, with losses estimated at $500,000.
Firefighters managed to save two nearby sheds and the neighbouring home, while ensuring no disruption to rail services close to the site.
SA Police, SA Ambulance and SA Power Networks also attended.
Owner Rob Hales, who was not home at the time, told 7News: “A lot of stuff can be replaced, but not photos, family things and trophies and just memories. I’ve been there for 65 years, so yeah it’s a bit of a loss.”
No injuries were reported. Fire investigators are working to determine the cause.
