A new State and Federal Algal Bloom Summer Plan is expected to be released this week, to support South Australia’s coastal regions through the warmer months.
A new BeachSafe app and companion website, Beachsafe.org.au, have just been announced, designed to keep locals and holidaymakers informed about real-time water quality, safety alerts and beach conditions.
The platform brings together live data from the Environment Protection Authority, Surf Life Saving SA and SA Health, allowing users to check whether it’s safe to swim before heading out.
It comes as a second round of Coast is Calling vouchers have been announced, offering discounted accommodation and experiences across the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Coast and the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas, encouraging visitors to return to beaches that have been affected by the algal bloom.
Environment Minister Susan Close says the plan aims to balance environmental monitoring with regional recovery.
“The blooms had a real impact on local communities and businesses last summer — this plan will help people stay safe while encouraging them to enjoy our beautiful coastline with confidence,” she said.
Eligible coastal businesses can register for Round Two of the Coast is Calling voucher scheme between the 27th of October and the 7th of November. Offers will be redeemable from early December through to the end of summer.
