Mount Barker is set for a major infrastructure boost if the South Australian Labor Government is re-elected in March.

The party has unveiled a more than $200 million dollar plan for the fast-growing Adelaide Hills town, with investments across transport, health, education, community safety, skills training and housing construction.

The package includes $80 million to upgrade the notorious Adelaide and Hawthorn Road intersection, a $96 million dollar redevelopment of Mount Barker High School, a new $25 and a half million dollar TAFE trades workshop for construction apprentices, a new 24/7 pharmacy and a new police station capable of housing up to 250 officers.

The plan builds on major projects already underway in the region, including the new Mount Barker Hospital, additional ambulance services, expanded schools and permanent on-demand bus services.

Premier Peter Malinauskas says the investment is about preparing the town for continued growth.

“Mount Barker is one of the fastest growing areas of the state, and we know it hasn’t always been planned as well as it should have,” he said. “This plan is about fixing past mistakes and setting the town up properly for the future.”

Mayor and candidate for the seat of Kavel, David Leach, says the package reflects the changing needs of the community.

“As Mount Barker grows, we need infrastructure that supports families, young people and seniors alike,” he said. “This plan helps our town make the transition from a country centre to a vibrant small city.”

Population forecasts suggest the Adelaide Hills could be home to almost 130,000 people by 2051, with much of that growth centred around Mount Barker.
