File this one under movies I’m both excited but petrified to see.
Under the new direction by James Gunn, DC have taken strides in separating themselves in the cinematic world from their counterpart over at Marvel. This time they’re leaning back in on some of the dark and gritty that saw them receive much backlash in their last cinematic universe. However, this time it seems far more appropriate.
After the success of other villain origin stories like Joker, DC are taking another swing with this body horror film, Clayface. Whilst far more obscure than some other DC villains, this one is sure to raise eye brows to those aware of the character. In the comics, Basil Karlo is famous actor turned criminal after his entire body is transformed into clay. This form allows him to shape-shift and manipulate his voice to sound like others. With this ability he takes on roles of the life time and commits crimes in Gotham City. DC have decided this character is next to be the star of their own film, but with the approach being heavily focused on the body horror element, almost, The Fly like in tone. You can check out the teaser below.
“Clayface” unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.
Clayface is directed by James Watkins (The Woman in Black) and stars Tom Rhys Harries (The Gentlemen, Doctor Who). But little is known of the film so far, with many asking where in the universe this film takes place. Is this in the same world as David Corenswet’s Superman, is it in Robert Pattinsons The Batman, or does it exist in a world all on it’s own.
Find out later this year when Clayface arrives in cinemas on October 23rd.
