Almost a year after a battery fire extensively damaged the main shed at the Goolwa Waste and Recycling Depot, reconstruction work is now underway.
Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority says a large portion of the shed was damaged in the October 2025 fire, with the rebuild now progressing at the site.
Construction work could cause some short-term delays and diversions as crews access areas of the depot that were not damaged in the fire. FRWA says overflow areas have been established to help minimise disruption.
The rebuild is expected to be completed in December 2026, ahead of the depot’s busy summer recycling period.
FRWA is reminding residents not to put batteries in household bins or hide them among other waste. Loose batteries and those embedded in items like cordless vacuums, toys and e-scooters can ignite when crushed in trucks or facilities.
There’s drop-off centres for used lithium-ion batteries for those wanting to safely dispose of them and many supermarkets and hardware stores offer safe disposal. Batteries can also be disposed of for free at FRWA depots.
