The Adelaide Central Market has cemented its place on the global stage, ranked the third best food market in the world.

Travel insurer AllClear analysed nearly 400,000 traveller reviews, with more than 94 per cent rating the market four or five stars.

Beating out Valencia’s Mercado Central, Paris’ Marché Bastille and New York City’s Chelsea Market, the only two food markets ranked higher than Adelaide are London’s Borough Market and Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market.

Adelaide Central Market General Manager Fabienne Reilly said its an extraordinary achievement.

“Our traders and community are the heartbeat of the Market and we’re honoured to be ranked so highly on a global stage,” Fabienne Reilly said.

With over 70 traders currently under one roof, the Adelaide Central Market is one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the southern hemisphere.

Fresh fruit and vegetables from the Hills are a staple, stocked by long-running traders like Michael’s Fruit and Veg and Thompson’s Fruit and Veg. There’s also products on offer from Fleurieu Milk Co and Alexandrina Cheese Company.

The international recognition follows a hugely successful Gather Round weekend for the Market, with more than 105,000 visitors through the doors during the football festival earlier this month.

The global acclaim – and major event success – comes as the Market is set to double in size as part of the $600 million Market Square development, featuring iconic SA producers and brands including Never Never Distilling Co and Red Cacao from the Adelaide Hills.

The expansion is expected to drive tourism, support more than 750 jobs and attract more than 10 million visitors each year once complete by the end of this year.
