The Goolwa Waste and Recycling Depot remains closed this week following a serious fire on Saturday that destroyed part of the main shed.
Around 50 CFS and MFS firefighters from across the region were called to the depot at around 3:45pm on Saturday and spent the evening bringing the fire under control. Willunga CFS say they worked with other brigades to pull apart waste piles with heavy machinery and carefully managed water runoff throughout the night.
The Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority says the blaze was caused by a discarded battery. They have urged residents not to place batteries in any household bin or depot rubbish.
The depot is expected to reopen on Friday the 17th of October, depending on how the clean-up progresses.
Kerbside bin collections are continuing as scheduled, though some runs may be delayed due to drivers needing to travel greater distances. Residents are asked to leave their bins out if they aren’t collected on the usual day.
The Strathalbyn Depot will open on Tuesday and Thursday, while the Yankalilla Depot will operate Tuesday to Thursday this week.
FRWA has thanked emergency services, staff, and the local community for their support and patience during the recovery.
