The Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram community is mourning the death of Albert, a much-loved Clydesdale who has died following a short illness.
Albert became unwell on Friday and received veterinary treatment, but died on Saturday morning at 18 years of age. Veterinary advice confirmed tumours were the cause of his illness and subsequent death.
Albert had been part of the Horse Drawn Tram team for 13 years and was a familiar sight to staff, volunteers, drivers and visitors to Victor Harbor.
Known for his calm nature and gentle temperament, he also helped train many new tram drivers and became a trusted member of the team through his steady presence and willingness to work.
He was also known for some quirks – including a dislike of fishing rods and a preference not to wear winkers, allowing him to see what was happening around him.
The City of Victor Harbor and Victor Harbor Tramway team said Albert’s contribution to the tram experience and the joy he brought to residents and visitors would be fondly remembered.
The tramway has also acknowledged the impact of his death on staff and volunteers, for whom Albert was a much-loved colleague and companion over many years.
Tributes have begun flowing from the community, with people describing Albert as a “beautiful soul” and “dear friend” while offering condolences to those who cared for him.
The Horse Drawn Tram will continue to operate as normal.
