The Mannum Community Men’s Shed opened its doors today as part of International Men’s Shed Week, welcoming locals to take a closer look at what goes on inside.
Located at 58A Walker Avenue, the shed has been running since 2014 and now has around 50 members.
Chairman Ralph Tuxford told ARN’s Adam and Jennie that members enjoy socialising, gardening, restoring old items and making woodwork and steelwork creations for the community.
“There’s some blokes that are quite happy to sit down, have a cup of coffee and talk rubbish. Other people get more involved; we have some very interested in woodwork, anything from a birdfeeder to a park bench… you do end up with a bit of camaraderie in a men’s shed,” he said.
He added that the organisation is keen to hear from more men who’d like to join up.
“There’s a fair range of men; retirees, single men, married men, but what we’re trying to do today is bring awareness to the shed because our average age is 73, so we’re looking for younger blokes, you know 50s or 60s.”
Mid Murray Mayor Simone Bailey joined the celebration, giving a speech about the value of the community organisation to the district.
“You’re always there to support different community projects and ventures… it’s very easy for Council to support. The more people that you get here, the more lives you change.”
The open day was part of the national Men’s Shed Week, which shines a light on the importance of connection, companionship and community among men.
