A community-led ribbon-cutting will take place this morning from 10am outside the new Victor Harbor Hospital Emergency Department, ahead of the State Government’s official opening next week.
The Member for Finniss, David Basham, says he and other community leaders were not invited to the government’s launch of the $16.8 million facility, which officially opens on Wednesday the 12th of November.
The Liberal MP said his community event aims to recognise the generations of local effort that helped build and sustain the Southern Fleurieu Health Service.
“While the Government has chosen to hold an official opening that excludes your Federal and State Members of Parliament, as well as many in the community who helped make this possible, we believe everyone deserves to celebrate this milestone,” Basham said on social media.
His office says Federal MP Rebekha Sharkie and Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes are among those not invited to the official opening.
A State Government spokesperson says the new Emergency Department represents a major investment in regional healthcare, and that public tours will be held this Friday and Saturday, with extra spaces added due to high demand.
“We encourage interested members of the community to register to attend for a behind-the-scenes look at the new ED prior to opening,” they said.
They have not yet responded to queries about elected officials being left off the invitation list.
Book a spot in a public tour via Eventbrite.
The facility will begin treating patients from Wednesday the 12th of November.
