Construction is underway on a new $2.32 million training and competition facility for the Murraylands Gymnastics Academy at the Murray Bridge Showgrounds.
The facility will more than triple the space currently available to the club, with a competition-sized floor, multiple foam pits, in-ground trampolines, viewing decks, changerooms and improved car parking. It is expected to take 12 to 16 months to build.
The project follows the closure of the academy’s Thomas Street facility in late 2023 after flash flooding and mould damage, with the club operating from smaller facilities since.
Murraylands Gymnastics Academy president Peter Angove described the start of construction as a “monumental day” for the club.
He said the new facility would allow the academy to welcome more members, coaches and competitions, while opening up more programs for children of different ages and abilities.
The project is supported by $1.5 million from the Australian Government’s Play Our Way program and $500,000 from the South Australian Government’s Power of Her program. A further $320,000 in federal funding has been provided for equipment.
