A counterfeit $50 note has been found at a prominent Murray Bridge business, just days after warnings about fake currency circulating across Adelaide.

Police say several counterfeit notes have been used at service stations, fast food outlets and hotels across the metropolitan area this month, and now the scam has reached the Murraylands.

The fake notes are described as thicker in texture and darker in colour than genuine currency. Officers are urging shoppers and business owners to take extra care when checking cash transactions.

Anyone who believes they have been handed a counterfeit note should handle it as little as possible, store it in an envelope, and call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. Police say details such as the time, location, and description of the person who passed the note are also vital.

Businesses with CCTV are encouraged to review footage if a suspicious note is found.

More information on how to spot counterfeit notes is available on the Reserve Bank of Australia website.
