A declassified report has revealed what a merger between three major Fleurieu councils might have looked like.
A 2016 investigation from consultancy firm LKS Quaero found that joining the Alexandrina, Yankalilla and Victor Harbor councils would have potentially saved ratepayers of over $40 million in 10 years, after an estimated upfront cost of $13 million.
The report was part of the Fleurieu Futures project between 2016 and 2020.

The councils involved said that the idea was never seriously entertained and won’t be going forward, highlighting that while it made financial sense it may spark an emotional backlash.
