Construction has begun on a major new public space in the heart of Mount Barker, with the first sod turned on Tuesday.
Mount Barker Mayor David Leach and Burke Urban managing director Kym Burke marked the milestone for the new Town Square and shared-use laneway, which form part of the broader Mount Barker City Centre project.
The Town Square will provide a new space for community events, gatherings and recreation in the growing town centre.
The Mount Barker and Districts Residents Association have acted as a key community advocate by gathering public feedback, commissioning the initial concept design, and successfully lobbying the local council to secure the vacant site for public use.
The Mount Barker District Council is contributing an estimated $3 million to the $5 million town square project, with the remaining $2 million funded by the South Australian State Government.
