Five new overtaking lanes will be built along Main South Road between Myponga and Cape Jervis, as part of a $111.8 million joint investment by the State and Federal governments.

The newly finalised plans include three overtaking lanes between Normanville and Cape Jervis; northbound between Normanville and Second Valley, southbound between Second Valley and Delamere, and northbound between Delamere and Cape Jervis. Two additional lanes will be built further north between Myponga and Yankalilla.

The upgrade aims to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes on one of the Fleurieu’s most notorious routes, used daily by up to 2,200 vehicles including commuters, tourists and freight. Between 2020 and 2024, there were 17 injury crashes along the Normanville to Cape Jervis section, including one fatality.

Transport Minister Emily Bourke says the new lanes will cut driver frustration and improve safety by creating more opportunities to pass slower vehicles.

“Starting with 94 potential locations for the new overtaking lanes, the community feedback has helped us settle on these three final locations,” Minister Bourke said.

Construction of the new overtaking lanes between Normanville and Cape Jervis is expected to begin in early 2026 and finish in early 2027, supporting about 115 full-time jobs.
