Former Meningie junior Tom Lewis has been crowned the 2025 Magarey Medallist, capping off a standout season with SANFL club Sturt.

The 25-year-old midfielder stormed home in the vote count at SANFL’s gala night last night (Monday, 1st September) finishing with 33 votes, well clear of Eagle Kobe Mutch on 23 and teammate Will Snelling on 21.

Lewis, who began his football journey at the Meningie Football Club, now known as the Coorong Cats in the RMFL, asserted himself mid-season by polling maximum votes in five consecutive matches.

It marks a career-defining achievement for the long-kicking left-footer, who has overcome major setbacks including a knee reconstruction in 2019 and a life-threatening ruptured spleen in 2022.

Lewis thrived in a leadership role this year, stepping up as acting captain while skipper James Battersby and vice-captain Snelling battled injury.

His impressive campaign also earned him a sweep of awards; the R.O. Shearman Medal as voted by the coaches, The Advertiser Player of the Year, and the SANFL Now Player of the Year.

Lewis becomes the 16th Sturt player to claim the Magarey Medal, following in the footsteps of Snelling, who shared the award with Norwood’s Harry Boyd in 2024.
