Tailem Bend’s young people aren’t waiting around—they’re stepping up and fighting for a brand-new playground, and the whole town is starting to take notice.

A passionate group of local kids and young families is pushing to transform Hughes Reserve, between Mott and Moir Streets, into a safe, inclusive play space the community can be proud of.

They’ve already made moves, applying to the Tailem Bend Progress Association to form a subcommittee that will drive the project, from council approvals to fundraise.

Local advocate Rachael Hawkes of Tailem Bend says the need is urgent. “Right now, families are facing a 20-minute walk just to reach the main playground—and that includes crossing train tracks and busy truck routes,” she said. “It’s just not good enough.”

And it’s not just about distance—it’s about safety and inclusion. “Many of our kids are neurodiverse and need calm, quieter spaces to play,” Rachael said. “They deserve somewhere they feel comfortable, not overwhelmed.”

The only other option—the netball and football oval playground—comes with its own problems, from restricted access on game days to heavy tourist traffic at the adjoining RV park.

Now, the community is being called to action. Supporters are invited to Hughes Reserve on March 28 at 11am for a filming and drone session to help bring the vision to life.

“This is our kids and young families leading from the front,” Rachael said. “They’re not just asking for change—they’re making it happen.”
