The Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula have picked up a strong showing in the first MICHELIN Guide South Australia overnight, marking the first time the international guide has expanded into Australia.
Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide’s Eastern Foothills has received the state’s highest honour with two MICHELIN Stars.
Four restaurants across the Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula have also been awarded one star each: Anvers Restaurant at Kangarilla, Maxwell Restaurant at McLaren Vale, LVN Restaurant at Bird in Hand at Woodside and Aptos at Stirling.
13 More Local Venues Recognised
The MICHELIN Selected category recognises restaurants whose cuisine impressed the guide’s anonymous inspectors and earned them a place in the main selection.
On the Fleurieu, those restaurants are Coriole Vineyards, d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant and Little Wolf Osteria at McLaren Vale, Pearl at Aldinga Beach and Star of Greece at Willunga.
In the Adelaide Hills, Clover and Stone at Nairne, Hardy’s Verandah and The Crafers Hotel Bistro at Crafers, Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard at Lobethal, Patch Kitchen & Garden at Stirling, Pike & Joyce at Lenswood, The Lane Vineyard at Balhannah and Thelma at Piccadilly have been included.
The has recognised 77 South Australian establishments in total, including 10 one-star restaurants, 16 Bib Gourmand recipients and 50 MICHELIN Selected restaurants.
Praise for South Australia’s food culture
International Director Gwendal Poullennec said the state’s debut was “very impressive”, praising its exceptional produce, skilled chefs and “unmistakable sense of place”.
He said inspectors were struck by the diversity of the state’s food, with European, Southeast Asian and Japanese traditions sitting alongside native ingredients including quandong, lemon myrtle and native Australian meats.
The guide also highlighted the use of fire, wood and charcoal across restaurants in regions including McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, describing them as techniques that allow local produce to speak for itself.
There was also a special award for the Adelaide Hills, with Maxime Martin from Hardy’s Verandah receiving the MICHELIN Guide Sommelier Award.
