The Murraylands motoring community is mourning the death of Roy Bretag, a life member and past president of the Murray Bridge Auto Collectors Club.

Mr Bretag, who also volunteered at Gilbert’s Motor Museum in Strathalbyn, died from a stroke on the 4th of September at the age of 80. His funeral was held in Murray Bridge on Friday.

Well known in local speedway and automotive circles, Mr Bretag was one of the people who built and designed the body of the famous Suddenly 88. He worked for Kevin Fischer from the age of 19 in 1963 and maintained lifelong ties to the region’s motoring scene, including as a coordinator of the biennial Twin Bridges Rally in Murray Bridge.

Tributes have poured in online, with members of the Speedway Rods of SA community describing him as a “fantastic bloke” and a “total gentleman.” A farewell post attracted hundreds of responses from those who remembered his generosity and contribution to the sport.

The Gilbert’s Motor Museum have shared this message about Roy’s passing.

“Roy’s passing has been felt deeply by the volunteers at Gilbert’s Motor Museum. Although he was a recent arrival to the group, his passion for cars of all types allowed him to integrate immediately. He loved to chat with the visitors about all things motoring. Our thoughts go out to Elaine and his family,” a team member said.

The Murray Bridge Auto Collectors Club described Mr Bretag as an esteemed member whose service and passion for motoring left a lasting legacy.

He is survived by his wife Elaine, children Daniel and Owen and their families, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
