Should There Be Tougher Cat Rules in Murray Bridge?

Murray Bridge residents are being asked whether the region needs tougher rules around cat ownership, as the Rural City of Murray Bridge considers its future approach to cat management.

Council has launched a community survey seeking feedback on roaming cats, responsible ownership, their impact on residents and the local environment, and possible management measures. The consultation follows a council decision in June to engage with the community on whether changes are needed.

Unlike some neighbouring council areas, Murray Bridge does not currently have mandatory cat containment or a cat curfew. The issue has been debated by councillors previously, with a cat curfew among options raised during earlier discussions. Local reporting last year said councillors had rejected a Mount Barker-style curfew at that stage.

Mayor Wayne Thorley said the consultation was an opportunity for residents to influence what happens next.

“We want to hear about people’s experiences and what they believe responsible cat ownership looks like and what approaches they think Council should consider.”

He stressed that no decision has yet been made to introduce compulsory confinement.

“Importantly, Council has not made a decision to introduce cat confinement or a Cats By-law, so this consultation is about listening to our community before decisions about future cat management are made.”

Community members can find out more and complete the survey via Council’s consultation portal, Let’s Talk.
Consultation closes at 5pm on 21 October 2026
