Keen bushwalkers and explorers are being urged to download a new app, which will help fire authorities better monitor fuel loads.

The NOBURN app uses AI to read users’ photos and judge how much fuel load is in an area, which will then create detailed maps which will fill in knowledge gaps for local firefighting units.

Machine learning developers at Adelaide University are hoping the app will become popular among those who spend a lot of time exploring.

Professor Javen Shi, Director of Advanced Reasoning and Learning at Adelaide University’s Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), looks forward to the app’s future already.

“Once we train the model, we don’t really need experts to go to the forest,” Professor Shi said.

“We can easily have thousands of citizens – such as bushwalkers and families on camping trips – who can take photos that our AI can use to make predictions.”
