The CFS have battled a large stubble fire in difficult conditions just north of Meningie this afternoon, which has claimed more than 500 hectares of land in under five hours.

Gusty winds which changed direction frequently kept firefighters on their toes, with the communities of Malinong and Hawks Nest under threat for a large portion of the afternoon.

A Watch and Act was first issued just prior to 12:30pm, with the fire burning in a north-westerly direction towards Bag Shaw and Malinong Roads.

The fire then began to move easterly, prompting authorities to warn local residents to leave.

The CFS downgraded the messaging at approximately 3:15pm, with 17 trucks and seven aircraft gaining control of the bushfire.

An advice message is still current, with those in the Coorong advised to monitor local conditions.

No cause has been determined at time of publishing.

The CFS yesterday flagged their concerns about the potentially difficult weather conditions which were forecasted, with unseasonably high temperatures and gusty winds prompting them to advise locals to only conduct burns in the morning or later at night.
