Authorities have been keeping a close watch on rail safety following a number of incidents, including a fatality in McCracken.

On 5 January 2024, an elderly overseas tourist died when he was struck by Steamranger’s Cockle train on January 5.

A few days later, Hills Fleurieu police launched an operation, keeping a close watch on pedestrians and cars and educating people on safe behaviours around rail crossings.

Superintendent Amit Sareen, the Officer in Charge of Hills Fleurieu LSA says safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“Crossing train or tram tracks against warning signals or in a dangerous manner only puts you and others at significant risk of serious injury or worse,” Superintendent Amit Sareen said.

Since Monday 8 January police have issued 20 expiation notices in the Victor Harbor, Port Elliot, Middleton and Goolwa areas.

A 33-year-old man was fined after his 4WD collided with a train on Skewes Road at Goolwa on Wednesday 10 January. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police will continue to monitor the public around rail crossings, educate community members and issue expiations where required.
