Mount Barker and Tanunda are being seriously considered for next year’s AFL Gather Round.
The AFL has locked in the dates for the second instalment of SA’s Gather Round, to be held during round 4 in early April 2024.
It is being reported the AFL league would ideally like two games to be played regionally, following advocacy from Premier Peter Malinauskas for a match in the Barossa Valley.
The region was overlooked this year because Tanunda’s grounds, which are being redeveloped, will not be ready until the end of this year.
According to the latest figures, this year’s four day event in Adelaide, metro areas and Mount Barker’s Summit Sport and Recreation Park, injected more than $83M into the local economy.
It also generated more than 150,000 visitor nights in SA.
As well as hosting next year, South Australia will host Gather Round in 2025 and 2026.
