A commemorative artwork is being unveiled in Murray Bridge this Friday 24 November.
A stone statue of water ripples by CHEB Art acknowledges the impact of domestic and family violence in the community and provides a safe space to gather, grieve and reflect.
The artwork and a bench for reflection has been installed near the end of Murray Cods Drive on the riverfront at Sturt Reserve.
It is part of a state-wide initiative called Place of Courage, Ripples Across SA, which is led by Spirit of Woman, brought to Murray Bridge by the Murray Bridge Collaboration on Violence Against Women and Children (MBCVAWC), with the support and funding from The Rural City of Murray Bridge (RCMB).
The official launch is scheduled for 11 am on Friday with a Ngarrindjeri Smoking Ceremony, live music, guest speakers, and a free community BBQ.
MBCVAWC Chairperson Linda Martin said the artwork will provide a place to grieve, find solace, heal, connect, and educate.
“We are determined to frame domestic and family violence as a whole-of-community issue and spread the message that we all have a role to play in education and prevention,” Linda Martin said.
Following the launch, a series of events in Murray Bridge will acknowledge the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. This annual international campaign begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and runs until December 10, Human Rights Day.
