Police are calling on drivers to stop mistaking the road for a racetrack.

During SAPOL’s state-wide week-long Operation Safe Speed from the 13th to 19th of May, 846 speed offences were detected, compared with 1,290 offences during the last Operation Safe Speed in November 2023.

Of these offences, 502 were expiated, arrested or reported.

During the operation, two lives were lost, and 11 road users were seriously injured.

Two drivers lost their licence for driving at Excessive Speed (over 45kph) and one driver for driving at Extreme Speed (over 55kph).

Just prior to the operation a Ferrari driver was caught allegedly travelling more than 70 kays over the limit on Gorge Road at Paracombe.

Police allege the 61-year-old man from Tennyson was driving 156km/h in an 80km/h zone on 11 May.

He was reported for driving at an excessive speed and at a speed dangerous, received an immediate 12-month loss of licence and had his car impounded for 28 days.

Superintendent Darren Fielke, Officer in Charge Traffic Support Branch said he is disappointed with the high level of speeding in our community, even though the number of detections have dropped since the last operation.

“The road is not a racetrack and you will get to your destination eventually, so drive at a speed to keep yourself and others safe.”
